| Password Management for Business Owners |
| Resources | |
|
After working with small business owners for almost a decade, I have learned that most of them have no idea on who, what and where their network and system passwords are. I have literally spent hours working on locating and resetting their forgotten and lost passwords. Lost passwords not only cause inconvenience, but also increase system downtime when you need to do any repairs.
Over the years I have tried and tested several password management programs and I do mean- several. There are many programs out there, ranging in price from $10 to $50. I thought I would share my experience with fellow business owners and colleagues so they don’t have to be frustrated with lost or forgotten passwords. I have been using a program called Passwords Plus by DataViz, Inc. for several years. I started using this program for simple password management, but over the years this has become the central repository for most of my passwords. Here are some of the features I like: Customizable Password Templates This program has preconfigured templates for bank accounts, websites, credit cards and much more. This makes it very quick to fill in new passwords and account details. You also have the ability to add your own custom fields and create custom templates. Categorization You can assign a unique category to each password or account; this makes it very easy to locate accounts by type. Encryption All information stored in the system is protected by 128-bit encryption. This level of encryption is the most effective level to achieve data security. Synchronize with Your Palm OS Handheld or Smartphone My favorite feature is the capability to synchronize my passwords program to my Windows Mobile Phone. This allows me to access my passwords from anywhere. If you have a palm based device, you can also synchronize your passwords with it. Other Features The program is very versatile and includes much more features then mentioned. Visit the manufacturer’s website for full features and details.
